Changing a bad habit is the cornerstone of self improvement, but most people find it incredibly difficult to do because they’ve been told to focus on the wrong things. In this video I'll break down the three parts of a habit according to science, show you how to break a bad habit and close with tips on keeping bad habits from coming back. I recently read the power of habit by Charles Duhigg and I wanted to share a couple lessons I learned about habit formation, how to break bad habits, and how to keep them from coming back once and for all. Every habit can be broken down into a three step process of cue, routine and reward. The cue is essentially a trigger that sends your brain into autopilot, this cue can be anything from a time of day to a location, to someone around you or maybe even a behavioral pattern. The second part of the habit loop is the “routine,”. And the last stage is the “reward,”. The reward stage is when your brain determines whether or not the routine is worthy of remember or not. If the routine has a strong cue and reward the routine becomes a habit. So if that was hard to follow Let me paint a real word example of this. Let’s say you have a meeting every day around 10am where an alarm goes off on your phone. This is your Cue. After the meeting is over you travel to the break room to buy and eat a cookie. This is your routine, but the reward may not necisarily be obvious at first. The reward is something that the routine accomplishes. Maybe the cookie satisfies your hunger, maybe it satisfies being low on energy, or gives you an opportunity to talk to a friend. This habit starts out as a conscious and deliberate activity, but overtime the process becomes more and more automatic largely for the sake of energy efficiency, The author of the power of habit says that The cue and reward become intertwined until a powerful sense of anticipation and craving emerges. In the case of the 10am meeting the cue of your alarm reminder going off would immediately trigger your craving. No wonder it’s so hard to break bad habits. Over the years we’ve been told by experts that to break a bad habit we need to fix the routine. people would instruct you to Stop eating that cookie every day, but in fact it’s the cue and the reward in the habit loop that influence the habit itself. If you identify and focus on your cues and rewards you can insert a new routine and eliminate the craving altogether. Step 1 to eliminate a bad habit is to Identify the cue, routine, and reward. The cue might be fairly obvious if your looking for it but remember it could be be anything from a time of day to a location, to someone around you or maybe even a specific behavioral pattern. The routine will be obvious. Eating the cookie, but the reward might take a little critical thinking. You want to try and determine if eating the cookie satisfying hunger, gives you a pick-me-up from being tired, or something else. Step 2, insert a new routine to eliminate the craving altogether. Once you’ve successfully identified the elements of your habit loop you can insert a new routine to eliminate the craving altogether. If you identified your reward as satisfying hunger, you could simply bring a banana to work and over time the new positive habit will emerge. So how long does it take to create a new habit? Some studies point to 21 days, some say 66 days and other people have said longer. I think it’s probably safe to say the evidence isn’t conclusive. Regardless of how long it takes your chance of success for eliminating bad habits will be drastically improved if you follow this two step process.
Britain's Mo Farah broke the two-mile indoor world record with a superb run at the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix. Farah, 31, left the field behind as he stormed home in a time of eight minutes 3.40 seconds - breaking Kenenisa Bekele's previous record of 8:04.34. It is the double Olympic champion's first world record. "This means a lot to me," Farah told BBC Sport. "I love representing my country, giving something back to all the people. Unbelievable." The build-up to Saturday's race had been dominated by a row with Great Britain team-mate Andy Vernon. Farah claimed Vernon had questioned his nationality after the double Olympic champion won European 10,000m gold in 2014, with Vernon describing that as a "huge, huge misrepresentation". The bad feeling clearly did not upset Farah on the track as he dominated the field in Birmingham, leaving Kenyan Paul Koech and American Bernard Lagat trailing as he ran a sub-four minute mile for the second half of the race, clocking 3:59.5. "It's been a difficult week and maybe he was fired up by everything that's gone on. That was Mo Farah at his very best. That was a tough record to beat. Farah ran a sub-four minute second mile. That is a performance that shows he is in great shape and it shows the calibre of the man." "It (the row with Vernon) inspired me, I wanted to do it," said Farah. "Whatever's happened has happened, we've got to move on, but at the same time I'm an athlete, that's what I do best. I just have to keep running." Asked if he had a message for Vernon, Farah said: "No, at the end of the day whatever's done is done. I just have to move on. "I think it's too soon to say anything right now. I've moved on and put that behind me. I want to keep running well." Vernon congratulated Farah on Twitter, saying: "Everything aside that was a cracking run @Mo-Farah. Congratulations on the new WR." Farah, who will skip next month's European Indoor Championships, has five global track titles over 5,000m and 10,000m but had not set a world record until Saturday. "Definitely, it's about setting myself a goal and knowing what I want out of the year," he said. "It's two different things going for a world record or going for a championship. "I shouldn't get carried away, it's only two miles indoors, but at the same time it would be nice to be able to do what I can do for 10k, if I can go close or break it. "But I will never give up (on championships). I want to be able to know I collected as many medals as I could for my country."
shorter version is better, minus the be-quiet-big-boys-don't-cry midsection Too bad that the song on a 7" 45 RPM single had Kathy Redfern's annoying be-quiet-big-boys-don't-cry junk ruining in midsong that 10cc's record label, Mercury had no time to omit, plus it's too bad that the repeated first verse was omitted too abruptly. I will call that song very heartfelt and bittersweet that touches my heart, because it's mainly all about marriage relationship falling out of favor. Besides it's very touching. I made a comment about that song on YouTube and said: It's too bad that in 1975 British band 10cc might have taken a break from having a wacky sense of humor and started concentrating on a serious relevant version of the bittersweet heartbreaking ballad, "I'm Not In Love", minus Kathy Redfern's self-parody and believe me it is 10 times better than the epic 6-minute version of that song with her part added. I made a note and said: Note: I removed Kathy Redfern's whispered voice that wasn't the perfect fit for the song about neglect that Eric Stewart was singing, because I feel the epic version of this song is too long and too boring which the BBC couldn't play from the start, so I had to shorten it down to 4 minutes and 25 seconds, which is a good length for me. Here's what the story said about the original with the irrelevant part added: Next up is the song that everybody knows, ‘I’m Not In Love’. Eric Stewart’s perennial about self-denial would have been a classic in songwriting form anyway (it was inspired by an argument he had with his wife, after she accused him of never saying he loved her and he replied that saying it everyday would become a cliché). It’s what 10cc did with it that makes it special though – Godley, Crème and Gouldman all sang ‘aaaah’ to every individual note of the scale, so that Stewart (the engineer) could fade them up at any time he wanted in the final mix and swap around different notes to make up different chords. This is such a clever, unique selling point that it’s almost got in the way of the song, but listen again to how cleverly the narrator’s self-denial about falling in lovebecomes obvious to everyone but himself. There have been so many love songs in the last 50 years I think I’ll scream if I hear another one, but this song’s clever twist (it’s an ‘I’m not in love song’) makes it one of the cleverest 45s ever produced. The only down-side for me is the rather weak backing of a simple acoustic and keyboard, which do an effective job of conjuring up a romantic mood out of nothing against the narrator’s will but misses the band interplay and range of ideas of the band at their best. I’m also deeply confused as to the middle section where the band’s telephonist rings up to tell us ‘big boys don’t cry’ – what’s this section supposed to mean? If it’s the narrator’s (non) girlfriend then why does she say something she’s not supposed to know about? And if it’s the narrator’s conscience, then why does it have a female voice? I’m confused…It goes without saying that the band added the section in afterwards after realizing that needed something else to liven up he middle bit.
